The Boy Scouts of America is fundamentally different than the Girl Scouts of the USA — and not because of gender. Chartering organizations have shaped the BSA in a way that has had lasting impacts.
Interesting take on this topic looking a few years later as Methodist churches and now Catholic diocese are often saying they will no longer charter. It is leading to BSA troops that are having to be chartered by their district but have a facilities agreement with the churches. But then the BSA district doesn’t want to charter and troops struggle to find a new charter org. I grew up in GSA and my mom was my troop leader and now I am BSA Advancement Chair in a troop. In my opinion I honestly think it would help troops remain in tact if the charter requirement was removed. Places like a library, rec center, community meeting center are way more likely to allow a troop to meet if they don’t feel the burden of oversight.
